This project started with collecting waste — old furniture, pieces of wood, steel and textiles — along the streets and in containers. At the thrift store I was amazed at how many textiles are actually thrown away before they are sold, purely because they are stained and labeled as 'dirty' and 'unsellable'. With 'Welcome to my House' I wanted to revalue these undervalued materials by using them as a metaphor to tell personal family stories.
Vlekkenkleed is an ode to my brothers who regularly spilled their drinks on the tablecloth. And Spaantafel refers to my father who was always renovating, so tools and chipboard became part of our furniture. By revaluing our household items and learning how to repair them, we allow ourselves to actually cherish the memories they carry, instead of carelessly throwing them away. Through a playful aesthetic, the help of a 'universal grid', and straightforward designs derived from construction toys like Sio Montage, 'Welcome to my House' invites to a sense of lightheartedness and simplicity around a topic like
