Within her project ‘FIBRE.’ designer Idunn Feyling transforms wasted human hair into handcrafted interior pieces. Historically human hair knew various applications, however in Europe today, about 72 million kilograms of it is wasted annually. Idunn sought to offer opportunities for it to be used anew. After researching human hair and comparing it to other natural and artificial fibers, Idunn noticed a lot of similarities. She recognized that our hair has very similar properties to fibers currently being used in industry and therefore it could be applied both functionally and aesthetically in interior fabrics and clothing.

For this initiative, conceptually Idunn was inspired by the principles of Deep Ecology and by Bruce Mau’s belief that beauty can inspire change to address global challenges. With ‘FIBRE.' she aims to reunite humans with the natural world by reimagining the connection between animals, plants, and humans from their shared ability to grow fibers. By blending textile arts, craftsmanship and material design with local sourcing and a revaluation of human resources she emphasizes the importance of moving towards circular material ecosystems and provides interesting pathways for industry to move towards more sustainable futures.
