‘Hold me, still’ is a project that aims to change the narrative surrounding death and grieving. Designer Melanie Groote explored how tactility, personalization and rituals can assist the grieving process by providing structure, comfort and meaning. The project consists of three series of memorial objects that are inviting to hold and touch or interact with. Providing a counterpoint to other existing memorial objects that mostly have display properties, Melanie aims to increase the sense of connection with the deceased loved ones.
Experimenting with shape, texture, weight, and material, these objects include glass urns, fabric urns and keepsakes made out of glass from melted sand. Each of these objects could be custom-made to suit individual needs and wishes and has features that makes them unique. The keepsakes for example originated from the idea of melting glass from the sand of a grave, if eventually the grave has to be cleared, however they could also be created from sand found in a favorite place of the deceased. Ultimately the project encourages people to share their experiences of grief more openly and to provide them with tools that can offer comfort and connection after losing a loved one.
