With'Project Romulus & Remus' designer Melle Benink aimed to fulfill his childhood dream of owing a ship. After discovering that there are numerous abandoned boats in Dutch shipyards, Melle saw an opportunity to repurpose them for his needs. After being provided with two small fiberglass sailboats and a nearby shipyard offering him space free of charge, Melle set out on his quest.

To create a cost-effective catamaran first he attached the boats together side by side. Offering him the stability and comfort similar to a 12-meter ship. Using other salvaged materials from various waste sites, he then built two cabines. To optimize for space and weight one is slightly higher, aimed at living and connecting with nature, the other is a lower and aimed at sleeping. By letting his design process be influenced by chance and the availability of raw (waste) materials, Melle was able to deliver on his personal desires and on a budget. A logbook and renders showcasing possible future adventures complete the project.

Ultimately 'Project Romulus & Remus'  serves as a reminder to the power of ingenuity and craft. Its methodology provides a pathway for breathing new life into otherwise neglected vessels and acts as a demonstrator for others with similar sense of adventure to do the same.
