Artifacts of introspection
Designer Yfke Beijer believes that in our fast paced world introspection is a radical act. We rarely take the time anymore to reflect on our emotional landscapes or to contemplate on the self. Yet these acts are of great importance to increase our overall wellbeing and to improve our brain metastability. So why don’t we practice more introspection in our daily lives?
With 'Artifacts of introspection' Yfke creates tools that serve as physical reminders for people to slow down and introspect for a while. Slowness is an important aspect of these designs as it is next to impossible, neurologically, to enter an introspective state when moving fast. The collection attempts to slow people down physically by invoking ritual and interaction. Besides that Yfke attempts to evoking a state of wonder through visual metaphors, tactility, and the use of colour. The colour black for example creates a sense of depth and different materials like burned wood and glass invite people to touch the objects.
